They were two different varieties. Both of them have grown well but one of them gets beautiful red cherries. We used to try netting it so the birds would let US pick ripe cherries. We've given that up. It bloomed especially lovely this year, without being bothered by frost. There were a lot of bees busy pollinating. Bumblebees, not honeybees.
This week is cherry picking week for the birds. What a delight to watch them flying in and out of that tree. Everyone is looking for the perfect fruit. Cardinals, robins, blackbirds and mockingbirds all noisily chasing the next bird away from the treasure.
Yesterday morning, Woodrow was perched in his cat-bird seat enjoying the show when he alerted me of something out of the ordinary. I stood up and looked out the window in time to see a bird I've waited for many years. A Cedar Waxwing was in the rhododendron. He stayed long enough for me to call Brad to see him. I'm waiting this morning with my camera nearby but so far he's a no show. They're like that I read. I guess that's how I got to be this old before I saw one. He was a beauty.
One more note about birds: last Sunday morning, I heard a Bob White - a quail. When I was a kid we often heard them and also an occasional Whip-or-will. Now, hearing a quail in our neighborhood is rare. The last time I heard a Whip-or-will was in Bedford County, decades ago. I'm hearing the quail again this morning. Stay safe, Bob White.
Shortly after we moved here, one Sunday morning we observed Mr. and Mrs. Quail and their young hatchlings strolling through our yard. What a delight it was to see them.
Hayley and I went for a walk this evening and I spied him in a muddy roadside ditch. I put him safely in the pasture so he didn't get run over. I think he was just waking from his winter nap. Live long and prosper, little guy.
Ten months since my last post....

I cannot believe the terrible time waster I have become. I am hanging my head in shame. I cannot brag of any great feats of late. I go to work, I come home. I feed sheep. I feed myself, I go to bed. I go to work.
Lazy is how I call it. Fat and lazy.

Hayley has grown up. She likes to torment Gus and Woodrow.
We're into spring now and it's snowed a few inches this day.

I've done a bit of knitting this winter. Having 2 projects completed by March is a good start for me. I knitted socks in January and a hat in February. I wear the socks to bed. My feet are always cold at night. The hat has pretty brown ewes all around it and some curly horned rams on the top of it. I love them both. For those of you who knit, the hat is a Kate Davies design. The socks are Kirsten Kapur's design.
Sunday's weather was just right. Temps were in the high 60's and low 70's. The skies were overcast and the winds were calm. No sunburn worries. No coats or umbrellas were necessary.
This was the fifth time I have donated a yearling Navajo-Churro ewe to the Youth Conservationist Program. Children and youths interested in raising heritage breed sheep can participate by submitting essays on why they want to raise heritage breed sheep. The donors are able to select who will receive their sheep.
The recipients have a list of requirements to fulfill within their first year of ownership. Those duties include breeding the ewe to a registered ram, showing the sheep at shows, making an item from the wool of their sheep and completing a project book of their year with their sheep. They are encouraged to keep in touch with the donor.
A young lady from Monongahela, PA received my Princess Dot. Dottie is going to be treated like a princess at her new home. I was pleased when I met the recipient and her family. I was satisfied that I had made the right choice for Dot's new home.

Best wishes to you, Callie. I can't wait to see the adventures you show Dot.
Bella opened lambing season a day before my vacation began and her sister, Butterfly, closed lambing season after I went back to work. Those silly sisters.
It's a week after their births and I still haven't shared this tale with you. Last Sunday morning when I went to the barn, not only was Mesa's Marimba there to greet me but CoCo was in labor. Since she had triplets last year and since she was so big, I felt certain she was carrying triplets again.
Dear friend Dixie was invited Thursday for Bella's lambing. That call went out late as I was hurrying to get everything set up. Dixie arrived 5 minutes after Calliope was born. We waited another 2 hours but no second lamb arrived. Sunday morning I called Dixie just after 7 AM to let her know another ewe was in labor. She showed up quickly and we WAITED.
Finally, a tiny white ewe lamb arrived. Upon seeing her size I felt quite sure there would be 3 lambs. CoCo cleaned her very well and made all the right mothering noises. Her name is Clarinet, Clara for short. She's a dear little girl. Clara was not in any hurry to nurse. CoCo wasn't too interested in getting her to nurse either. Multiple moms often are more interested in delivering the next lamb than in seeing the present lamb nurses.

CoCo with triplets L to R Castanet (Nettie), Clarinet (Clara) and Cornet (Cory)

CoCo caused me a problem last year when she wouldn't allow one of her triplets to nurse. Bottle babies, while fun, are work, worry and expense. Baby lambs NEED mama's colostrum or first milk for their survival. It is laden with antibodies to protect the newborn lamb from illness. If she won't allow the lamb to nurse you have milk mama and get the colostrum into the lamb within its first couple hours of life. The lamb's ability to absorb the antibodies drops rapidly. At the same time, the lamb's need for sustenance increases rapidly. After a day or two of mama's milk you can purchase commercially prepared lamb re-placer. Cows' milk doesn't contain enough fat to sustain a lamb. Baby lambs nurse many times a day, just like human babies. They don't wait for you to get up in the morning or wait for you to come home from work. To my thinking, asking someone to come here and bottle feed a lamb once or twice a day for a month is asking a lot. The past 2 years, I've needed my sister-in-law to fill in while I'm at work. She graciously accommodated my request but I still didn't want to ask.
It must have been an hour and a half before CoCo decided it was time to deliver ewe #2. A larger spotted cocoa colored ewe was delivered this time, Castanet. Her nickname is Nettie. Nettie was more eager to nurse than Clara. Good for her. It didn't diminish my worries about Clara getting a drink.
Now Coco was impatient to get the next lamb out. When she began laboring, I went in the stable to check her. Much to my disappointment the lamb's hind feet were showing.
Lambs, like humans, don't always present like they are supposed to do. Multiple births can complicate birthing positions, too. My "Go To"book is Storey's Guide to Raising Sheep. It says when you are pulling a breech lamb, don't stop pulling until the head is delivered. As soon as the umbilical cord is disturbed, the lamb takes a breath. When it's breech, its head is still inside mama, allowing the lamb to breath birthing fluids into its lungs.
I told Dixie what I was going to do and then I did it. I pulled him out and suctioned his mouth and nose. He was a big white ram lamb, sturdy and hungry. Cornet (Cory) was on his feet very quickly (less than 10 minutes) and eager for a drink. I was glad Dixie was there for the moral support. I hate to pull lambs.

Seeing Tiny Clara get a drink from CoCo gives a shepherd a happy heart.

It was about 24 hours before I felt confident that little Clara was getting milk from CoCo without me intervening. Numerous times through the first day, I held CoCo so Clara could get a drink. She'll never be as big has her siblings but she's a happy lamb. I'm glad to report all three are doing well.

No lambs have been born here in the past week.

The tally is 2 single lambs, a ram and a ewe and 2 sets of triplets. One set has 2 rams and one set has 2 ewes. That gives us 4 ewe lambs, 4 ram lambs and 2 big mamas ready to burst.

One clean, dry lamb was awaiting me when I went to the barn Sunday morning. Mesa is my oldest ewe. She's tricked me time and again with how many lambs she's carrying.
Since the first lamb was born here in spring 1995, each year has it's surprises. Mostly, I've learned I don't know much. I'm wrong about how many lambs a ewe is carrying. I'm wrong about what colors they will be. I'm wrong about who will deliver in what order. I've even been wrong about who was getting lambs. (That's a story in itself.) It keeps a shepherd humble.
Tresor comes from a long line of wonderful ewes. Her many great-grandmother Laurel came here in 1994 from the Navajo Sheep Project when it was still at USU. Tresor was a tiny triplet with 2 bigger brothers. This is her third lambing. After 2 years of twinning, this year she produced 3 lovely healthy lambs.
First born ram lamb, Trumpet arrived about 10:30 PM Friday evening. Slightly larger ram, Trombone was second and arrived about 12:30 AM Saturday morning. Then I went to the house and to bed. I was quite surprised when I went to the barn Saturday at daylight to find a third lamb, a ewe, Tympani. She's every bit as nice as her brothers. The boys have white on their faces. Tympani has just a few white hairs on top of her head. They're such a lively bunch. I hope to add a video of them for you to watch.
My lambing vacation is 74 hours out. I have asked the sheep to wait until I can be here with them. Sometimes they co-operate with me, sometimes they don't. This is for sure, spring has arrived early here in south central PA.
I hope winter doesn't return now that lambing is this close. We had very little winter. Robins, bluebirds and red-wing blackbirds all made early appearances. Spring peepers have been singing their songs here for a couple weeks now. Crocuses, daffodils and forsythia are all bursting forth early.
The six expectant ewes have rounded nicely. The lack of snow has allowed them daily exercise to pasture. As I was cleaning the donkey's stable the other day, our new pup, Hayley, ran toward the sheep. Fiona, our guard donkey, wouldn't allow her access to the sheep. YAY! Fiona put herself between Hayley and the ewes! How did she know to do that? She never guarded before coming here but she knows what to do.
We had a new occurrence - water in our basement. I had bragged to a co-worker at the beginning of our rainy week that in 25 years, we had never had water in our basement. Sept. ninth's deluge changed that. We spent last weekend drying out. We vacuumed 200 gallons out, then turned on the fans and dehumidifier.

The sheep got sheared Wednesday evening. There was a thunderstorm going on outside but all the sheep were dry in the barn. YAY! Dan (our shearer) will soon wrap up his fortieth shearing season.
I have wavered between breeding sheep and not breeding sheep for 2012 lambs. Here's the latest on that: I will breed 6 ewes to Blue this fall.

The cooler weather and shortening days have Blue thinking of the upcoming breeding season. As I watched Blue pacing the fence line admiring the ewes, I was reminded of a Johnny Cash song.
I apologize if the donkey may make you think of Hannibal Lecter. Fiona's wearing a grazing muzzle for her own good. She loves grazing, so to keep her from foundering on the lush grasses she is muzzled. This muzzle allows her to eat and drink at will. It just makes eating more difficult for her.

This month will mark a year she's been with the sheep. They all continue to progress in cultural understanding. Fiona and I are on friendlier terms, too. I took the banner photo yesterday when I saw her laying beside the sheep in the pasture. I hadn't seen it before. When your belly is full and the temps are warm, take an outdoor nap. Mm-mm - good.
The ewes are 6 of the 7 sheep in the banner photo. The dark ewe in the center back and the donkey are still here with me. The second group to leave here has also moved north and east of here. They are about an hour from NYC. That group is composed of 8 of this year's ewe lambs. I received this photo of them grazing upon arrival at their new home yesterday.Yes, there are 8 sheep in this photo. A big boy, Lightning McQueen, and a little girl, Sally Carrera from Disney Pixar's "Cars." In the photo below, Sally is standing by her mother and Lightning is resting in Mom's shade. Blue is the sire to these two lambs. In this photo they are about 27 hours old.Jetta was marked on my calendar to deliver this weekend. This was her first delivery. She had a big black boy - Flik and a brown/gray tiny mite girl - Princess Dot. These two are named from "A Bug's Life." Princess Dot is very small beside her big brother. I didn't weigh them but my guess is 5 pounds and 10 pounds. This is the largest size discrepancy I've seen in a few years. Jetta's babies are by Newman. In this photo they are about 16 hours old. I was in the house, bathed and in bed by midnight. So that's a wrap for lambing this year - YAY! Twenty-two lambs to eleven ewes. Nine sets of twins, 1 set of triplets and a single. Seven sets of twins were a boy and a girl, 2 sets of twins were 2 girls, the triplets were a girl and 2 boys and the single lamb was a boy. The final tally 12 girls and 10 boys.Shepherd's Lofthttp://www.blogger.com/profile/01769586772026811535noreply@blogger.com3tag:blogger.com,1999:blog-6340940063804493502.post-56333216742472685912011-03-27T21:19:00.001-04:002011-03-27T21:19:17.238-04:00March 27 - Butterfly

Butterfly's Ariel and Eric, originally uploaded by lamb lady.

Butterfly delivered her twins Sunday morning. I would be lying to tell you I didn't have anxious moments during this birthing. She delivered Eric first. When Ariel was born she paid her no mind and went about cleaning Eric. I put Ariel on a towel in front of Butterfly and swooped up Eric in a second towel, taking him out of Mom's visual range for a short time until she realized she had another lamb that needed her care. (You see, last year I wasn't there when she gave birth in the pasture. When I found her she had bonded to one of the lambs and the other needed bottle fed. I didn't want that to repeat.)
I'll spare you the entire story but this year Mom likes both her babies. YES! The fussing lamb was hungry Flora. What I was surprised to see was Liberty with 2 black and tan ewe lambs in the large stable. Liberty isn't fond of me so I've been hands off with her as much as possible. She's a first time mom and doing well. Her babies are named Laverne and Esmerelda from "The Hunchback of Notre Dame." About the time Liberty was getting her lambs cleaned and fed, CoCo Chanel went into hard labor. I'd been concerned about CoCo. She's a big girl and last year delivered twins but one was stillborn. She promptly delivered a girl and boy Thursday morning. I was calling my co-workers to keep them abreast of the birthings when CoCo got agitated, had contractions and delivered a third lamb, a ram.
She had black lambs last year. I bred her to Blue again and this year all three lambs are tan and white - go figure. These lambs names were suggested by my cousin, Lynette. She wanted a Copper and Tod from "The Fox and the Hounds." The ewe's name is Vixey, from the same movie. Copper is CoCo's golden boy. She's lukewarm toward Vixey and she's giving me fits about letting the Tod nurse. He's getting smarter and stronger - I'll be watching closely how things progress with them.Shepherd's Lofthttp://www.blogger.com/profile/01769586772026811535noreply@blogger.com0
